Culture and tradition at the heart of Friulane footwear
The story of friulane shoes is deeply rooted in the cultural and historical traditions of Friuli, a region in northern Italy, known for its artisanal excellence. These shoes, also known as "furlane" or "papusse," were originally created as practical footwear for the working class in the 19th century.
Friulane were hand-stitched using available materials like worn-out fabrics and old bicycle tires for the soles, making them both sustainable and durable.
The shoes became particularly popular in Venice, where gondoliers favored them for their soft soles, which didn't damage the boats' varnish. Over time, friulane evolved from practical, everyday footwear into stylish and fashionable items, celebrated for their comfort, elegance, and artisanal craftsmanship.
